Fast paced co-ed flag football league, Showtime Flag has unveiled its 2024 competition, ‘Showtime Bowl Series XI’ which will have twelve clubs compete for twenty million Naira.
The contest patterned after the American football superbowl series, will hold from September 5th to December 15, 2024 at the Meadow Hall located at Alma Beach Estate, Meadow Hall Way, Lekki Penninsula, Lagos. Will bring the best of the sport.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Showtime Flag Football League (SFFL), Manal Nassar who spoke at a media conference in Lagos, the N20 million will be shared by all the participating teams; as the team which comes top goes home with N6m, the 1st runner up gets N4m, the 2nd runner up gets 2.5m. She added that the fifth, sixth, seventh and eight positions gets N1m each. The 9th position, 10th position and the last two teams gets N400,000, N300,000, N200,000, and a hundred thousand Naira respectively.
“I want to unveil to you the Showtime Bowl Series which will have twelve teams compete for twenty million naira as against last year that onlt N2.5m was up for grabs. The Showtime Series gets more interesting even as our major sponsor of the sport is ‘HELL’ energy drink. We are selling the entertainment of the sport and there will be music as usual during interval with the DJs entertaining the audience and top artistes serenade the spectators. Last year we had 9ice, Young John and the Mayor of Lagos on stage,” she stated.
Adebisi Adejare, one of the organisers noted that the sport is open for local and international collaborations as the Showtime Flag continues to get more exposure and young men and women embrace the sport. He added that for the Showtime Bowl Series, the teams that will participate include Spartan FC Lagos, Lagos Rebels, Lagos Raptors, Titans, Lagos Mavericks, Outlaws, Warriors, Off-Season Athletic, Panthers, Lagos Hawks, Wolverine and the Lagos Athletic flag football.
Head Refree, G Akinsola stated that new rules has been introduced into the Showtime Bowl series to allow for better participation and development of the sport.
Showtime flag football co-organiser, Adebayo Adejumo disclosed that the sport has made inroads into the public with awareness participation ad campaign made at different areas in Lagos including the ghetto cities like Ajegunle using the Showtime Street campaign. Adejumo stated that the reception has been very encouraging as more will be done to take the sport to the inner cities.
“Showtime Flag has grown in leaps and bounds with the Semi-pro League floated during the seasons and this has been running year in year out. The Showtime Pro-league and the Showtime Street are initiatives that has been successful bringing the sport to television and also to the streets respectively.
CEO of Titans, Alaezi Akpuru stated that the sport, Showtime Flag which began in 2018 is fast becoming a household name sport with the public, both he urban and the hinterland of Lagos embracing the sport. She noted that having women play the game with the men is enthralling and the Titans has a total of forty men and women players on its roster, even as the game gets more interesting in the coming showtime bowl series slated for September 15.
