The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft crash in Ondo State has claimed the lives of all 25 people on board.

LEADERSHIP reports that the tragic incident has continued to spark sympathy, reactions, and clarifications from the federal government, the state government, NAF, and residents of the area where the crash occurred.

Here are 10 key things known about the incident:

1. The Tragedy Occurred on October 5, 2026

The Nigerian Air Force aircraft crashed on Monday, October 5, in the Igbokoda area of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The aircraft came down in a swampy creek area near a naval base.

2. The Aircraft Was An ATR-42, Not A Helicopter

Contrary to some initial reports, the aircraft involved was an ATR-42-500MP operated by the Nigerian Air Force and identified as NAF 931.

3. It Was Flying From Benin To Lagos

According to the NAF, the aircraft was on a routine mission from Benin City, Edo State, to Lagos when the accident occurred.

The aircraft was operated by the NAF’s 81 Air Maritime Group, based in Benin.

4. All 25 People, Not 32, On Board Died

The NAF subsequently confirmed that 25 people were on board, five crew members and 20 passengers, and that there were no survivors.

Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo had initially said 32 people were on board, while the Presidency also initially referred to 32 casualties. The NAF later clarified that NAF 931 had 25 people on board.

5. Air Traffic Controllers Lost Contact With The Aircraft

Reports indicate that communication with the aircraft was lost at about 9:13 a.m., shortly after the flight began.

Air traffic controllers were unable to re-establish contact before the aircraft crashed.

6. The Aircraft Was Configured For Surveillance And Maritime Operations

The ATR-42 aircraft operated by the NAF are configured primarily for maritime patrol and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions.

They can also perform search-and-rescue operations and limited transport duties.

7. One Of The Pilots Had Married 16 Days Before The Crash

One of the co-pilots, Squadron Leader Ahamefule Aham Man-Ugwueje, was among those killed.

Reports said he married fellow NAF officer, Flight Lieutenant Damilola Adekunle, in Abuja on 19 September 2026, just 16 days before the crash.

8. Recovery Efforts Were Complicated By The Crash Site

The aircraft wreckage was submerged in a swampy and difficult-to-access area around the Igbokoda creeks.

Recovery teams faced murky water, thick vegetation and difficult terrain, with amphibious excavators and technical personnel later deployed to assist the operation.

9. The Crash Has Triggered National Mourning

President Bola Tinubu expressed sadness over the deaths and ordered a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash.

The President also declared three days of national mourning in honour of the military personnel who died in the incident.

10. One Of The Officers Was Commissioned Nine Days Earlier

Flying Officer IM Adeshina was among the victims of the crash, barely nine days after he was commissioned into the Nigerian Air Force.

Adeshina was commissioned on 26 September 2026, after emerging as the Best Graduating Cadet of Branch Commission Course (BC) 3.

His promising military career was cut short just nine days after he earned his commission.
