The Save Nigeria Movement (SNM) has demanded an urgent retraction and apology from Governors Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna state and Umar Ganduje of Kano State as well as a spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, over what it called outrageous statements allegedly made by the trio against the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, over the Naira redesign policy.
The SNM in separate letters to the trio dated February 5, 2023 and signed by TD Sorkaa, said it won’t hesitate to drag them to court if such statements were not withdrawn within the next seven days.
Fani-Kayode on record accused Emefiele of nursing a hidden agenda with the introduction of the Naira redesign policy while speaking on a Channels Television’s special election programme, The 2023 Verdict, on February 1, 2023.
Governor Ganduje on his own part was said to have made some inflammatory statements that Emefiele introduced the change of Naira notes because of his failed presidential ambition.
While Malam el-Rufai was accused of making some inciting statements that the Naira redesign and cash swap by Emefiele was a ploy to make All Progressives Congress (APC) to lose elections while featuring on Channels Television’s breakfast show, Sunrise Daily, on February 1, 2023.
The SNM, in the letter, said Emefiele acted within the mandate of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act and clear instructions of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“Moreover, any attempt by you to politicize a legitimate policy and directive of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria will be vehemently resisted by our clients within the ambits of the law.
“We hereby demand forthwith you tender apology to Nigerians and retraction of your statements in three (3) national dailies and Channels Television within seven (7) days upon receipt of our legal correspondence.
“TAKE NOTICE that should you fail or refuse to tender apology and retraction of your unsubstantiated statements within seven (7) days upon receipt of our legal correspondence, we will have no option but to take all legal steps to compel you forthwith.” the group wrote in the letter to the trio.
