National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed admiration and commendation for the outstanding leadership and transformative reforms being implemented at Yakubu Gowon University (formerly University of Abuja) under the stewardship of its acting vice chancellor, Prof. Patricia Lar Manko.

This was contained in a press statement signed by Comrade ANZAKU Shedrack Ovye, secretary- general of NANS.

He said since assuming office on February 6, 2025, Professor Manko has demonstrated an uncommon commitment to reviving the university’s integrity, stabilising its internal systems, and promoting a culture of academic excellence.

“In just five months, Professor Manko has demonstrated unparalleled commitment to restoring stability, advancing academic excellence, and prioritising student welfare, setting a new standard for university administration in Nigeria.

“Upon taking office, Professor Manko inherited a university mired in leadership crises and internal divisions. Through her strategic and diplomatic engagement with university unions, including ASUU, SSANU, NASU, and NAAT, she has fostered industrial harmony, transforming a once-divided institution into a unified and productive academic community. Her ability to resolve conflicts and build bridges has created a conducive environment for learning and growth.

“Professor Manko’s academic and governance reforms have been remarkable. She has restructured appointments of heads of departments and directorates, correcting past irregularities where she appointed a three-man committee led by professors to investigate academic problems and proffer solutions that will enhance teaching and assessment standards.”

NANS also commended her for student-focused initiatives, most notably her efforts to restore transparency and confidence in student union governance.

“Following years of student apathy and dissatisfaction over the integrity of e-voting systems, Professor Manko ensured that the 2025 Student Union Government election was the most credible in the institution’s history.”
