National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Diaspora has passed a vote of no confidence in Nigeria’s acting High Commissioner to Australia, Ambassador Jane Bassey Adams, citing alleged negligence and poor engagement with Nigerians abroad
In a statement signed by its President, Comrade Juwon Fayomi, the association accused the envoy of failing to respond to official correspondence and neglecting key responsibilities expected of her office.
The group said four separate letters seeking collaboration on its annual international summit, scheduled to hold in Australia, were ignored, describing the development as “deeply concerning and unacceptable.”
Fayomi said the summit remained a vital platform for intellectual exchange, policy dialogue and international collaboration among Nigerian students, adding that the mission’s silence reflected “a troubling gap in accountability.”
The association also expressed concern over what it described as the envoy’s absence from major national events, particularly Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations across various states and territories in Australia.
According to the statement, such events are critical for fostering unity and projecting Nigeria’s image abroad, stressing that consistent non-attendance raises questions about commitment to public service.
It further alleged that the diplomatic mission’s limited participation in broader community engagements has contributed to the marginalisation of Nigerians in Australia.
The group cited the September 2025 launch of the African Centre of Engagement at RMIT University as an example, noting that the acting high commissioner neither attended nor sent a representative.
It described the development as a missed opportunity to strengthen bilateral and institutional ties between Nigeria and Australia.
