Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has constituted a five-man committee to rid the local government areas of ghost workers.

This was disclosed by the senior special assistant to the governor on public affairs, Comrade Peter Ahemba, in Lafia yesterday.

He said the decision was part of the resolution of the State Economic Council chaired by Deputy Governor Emmanuel Akabe at its recent meeting in Lafia.

According to him, the screening to determine the actual number of the LGs workforce was intended to block leakages and enable the local governments to pay the N70,000 minimum wage to staff.
He said the exercise became more imperative following complaints of over bloated workforce especially in development areas.

He, however, said the decision was not meant to undermine the authority of local government leadership or interfere with the autonomy granted the councils.

Ahemba said all the local government chairmen had been encouraged to key into the food security drive of the federal and state governments by acquiring large expanse of lands to enable them cultivate any crop of their choice.

He noted that as part of the effort to encourage them in that direction, all the 13 chairmen in the state were presented two tractors each by Vice President Kashim Shetima during his recent visit to the state.

He said Governor Sule directed that revenue generation between the state and local government should be centralised for proper collection without any form of leakages and accountability.
