To this end, the state has come up with a legislation giving it a legal backing to operate.

The legal document titled, “The Nasarawa State Electricity Law 2024”, has been assented to by Governor Abdullahi Sule at a ceremony in Government House Lafia.

LEADERSHIP reports that a constitutional amendment signed into law by the former President, Muhammadu Buhari in 2023, empowered the 36 states of the country to generate, transmit and distribute electricity in regions covered by the national grid.

Titled, “The Fifth Alteration Bill No. 33, Devolution of Powers (National Grid System)”, the law stipulated that states can enter the electricity generation business.’’

Speaking while assenting to the law, Governor Sule said the electricity law which stems from the presidential initiative will allow Nasarawa State utilise the hydro and solar energy sources that abound in the state.

He said his administration would bring on board experts who would make the power initiative come to fruition.

For his part, the general manager of Nasarawa State Electric Power Agency, NAePA, Engr Yakubu Sulaiman, appreciated Gov. Sule and the House for making the law a reality.

Engr. Suleiman said the electricity law is a fallout of the need to regulate the affairs of electricity within the state, leading to the establishment of a commission to that effect in order to boost power supply in the state.
