Nasarawa State has recorded no fewer than 852 cases of Gender Based Violence (GBV), between January and September, 2025.
This was disclosed by the commissioner for Women Affairs and Humanitarian Services, Barrister Hauwa Samuel-Jugbo, during an event commemorating the 16 Days of Activitism against gender based violence yesterday in Lafia.
The commissioner described the situation and consequent statistics as alarming, stressing that this is unacceptable and must end.
She expressed worries that the situation is compounded with the rise in technology-induced violence as the world becomes increasingly digitalised, while calling for joint action against the menace.
“The technology crimes such as: Cyberstalking and online harassment, Non-consensual sharing of intimate images (“revenge porn”), Online bullying and blackmail, Digital impersonation and identity theft, Sexual exploitation through digital platforms, Defamation and threats circulated via social media or messaging apps.
“Such crimes destroy reputations, weaken mental health, and expose women and girls to deeper emotional and even physical harm.
“While we acknowledge these risks, we must also embrace the immense opportunities the digital space offers—in education, entrepreneurship, innovation, career growth, and leadership.
“We therefore encourage our women and girls not to be afraid to explore technology. They should acquire digital skills, access information, and utilise online economic opportunities,” she stated.
She commended Governor Abdullahi Sule for demonstrating strong political will by strengthening the institutional framework while putting in place measures aimed at combating gender-based violence in the state.
The commissioner also appreciated service providers and partners who work tirelessly—often under challenging conditions—to support survivors of GBV, noting that their resilience has saved lives, restored hope, and strengthened the collective fight against the menace.
“We urge you to remain steadfast because every survivor deserves a system that believes, protects, and supports them,” she said.
