Nasarawa State Government has suspended the ongoing work on two primary school projects in Keana local government area of the state over failure of the contractors to execute quality jobs.

The projects include construction of two classrooms blocks at LGEA Primary School Aloshi.

Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB), Dr Kassim Muh’d Kassim ordered the stoppage of work on both projects during an unscheduled visit to the school.

LEADERSHIP reports that the state government through NSUBEB had last month awarded contracts for the construction, rehabilitation and parameter fencing in some basic schools across the state.

The NSUBEB chairman who arrived at the school at about 8:49am ordered one of the contractors, Baba Sisters Engineering to pull down the substandard ceiling used and replace the same with the ones specified in the award letter.

He warned the contractor that failure to use the Brazilian brand of ceiling specified in the agreement would lead to the revocation of the contract.

The chairman also ordered the second contractor, Namairo and Sons, to bring down an entire building for installing the pillars at the wrong place.

“Please bring down this building and start the pillars from the ground, I want to see the process and monitor it strictly to the end. You can’t put pillars in the middle of the building; such won’t last and may collapse, posing a big threat to pupils,” he said.

The NSUBEB chairman said the board would not accept substandard work, warning that any contractor who failed to adhere strictly to the contract specification would not be paid.

“We have included all the materials to be used in the award letters issued, and failure to follow my instructions attract consequence,” he said.
