Nasarawa State government is set to employ over 1,000 teachers to boost basic education in its rural communities.

Governor Abdullahi Sule disclosed this at the weekend when he received members of Buku-Gbunchu-Kambre communities of Akwanga local government area at the Government House, Lafia.

The delegation, led by Prof. Samuel Alu, was at the Government House to appreciate the governor for the construction of the Buku-Kambre-Andaha Road.

Sule said his administration was finalising modalities for the recruitment and was particularly interested in teachers willing to serve in their communities.

“You came at the right time when you are asking for employment for your graduates. We are currently employing over a thousand teachers and we are interested in employing those who will go to their communities and bring up the standard of education there,” the governor said.

He also announced that the state had awarded contract for the construction of a model school at Central Primary School, Akwanga, adding that funds had been released for the project.

Sule directed interested graduates from the area to apply through the Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board, NSUBEB, noting that the exercise would be strictly merit-based.

“It will not be an opportunity for automatic employment because their son is the Chairman of NSUBEB or because they are Mada, but they would be employed because they are qualified to teach,” he said.

Speaking on unity in the zone, the governor explained his administration’s decision to balance key appointments between Akwanga and Nasarawa Eggon.

“When we decided that we were going to have a Specialist Hospital and the College of Education was going to have a new provost, I told some of our leaders that one of the positions would go to Nasarawa Eggon and one would come to Akwanga.

“So, immediately the position of Provost was given to Akwanga, I ensured that the position of CMD goes to Nasarawa Eggon. That was what happened,” Sule said.

He thanked Prof. Alu for accepting the outcome of the Chief Medical Director interview and assured the delegation that government would look into their requests for the creation of Buku-Gbunchu-Kambre District, a police outpost, Mada South Chiefdom and a healthcare centre.

Earlier, Prof. Alu said for years, the communities had endured poor road connectivity affecting movement of people, farm produce and access to markets and healthcare.

“Roads are more than mere infrastructural projects; they are pathways to renewed hope, prosperity, connectivity and a better future for our people,” he said.

Alu also appealed to the governor to consider qualified sons and daughters of the communities for employment in the state civil service.
