National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) has partnered with the Kaduna State Legislative Service Commission to achieve financial and administrative autonomy.

During a working visit to Kaduna, Sani Said Kazaure, the national commissioner of Northwest NASC, alongside commission members, urged the state government to consider granting the commission the necessary independence to optimise its operational efficiency.

He urged the commission to work closely with the legislators to develop modalities for their budgets.

He emphasised that the visit aimed to foster closer ties with the state government and ensure alignment of State Assembly commissions with established legislative norms, thereby streamlining operations for enhanced legislative effectiveness.

According to him, NASC was established to ensure that the legislature is well managed by providing qualified personnel to work at the assemblies.

Highlighting a pertinent concern, Kazaure noted the current practice of staffing in the legislature, where personnel are appointed or posted by the Head of Civil Service rather than by the Assembly Service Commission.

“We want Kaduna State to conform with the federal level regarding staffing and financing. We want them to be successful because Kaduna is a benchmark for Northern Nigeria; if Kaduna doesn’t perform, nobody is going to perform, so if you perform badly, it means we’ll all perform badly”.

The Kaduna State Legislative Service Commission chairman, Hon. Nuhu Goroh-Shadalafiya, expressed gratitude for the visit and acknowledged the delegation’s constructive input, saying Kaduna has a working governor who is also a legislator.

He noted that they are working on a law governing the State Service Commission.

He also commended the state governor, Uba Sani and the speaker, Kaduna State House of Assembly, Hon Yusuf Liman, for giving them the opportunity.
