The House of Representatives has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) in its efforts to provide quality cancer care for Nigerians.
Chairman of the House Committee on Healthcare Services, Hon. Amos Gwamna Magaji, made this pledge during an oversight visit to NICRAT in Abuja. He highlighted the devastating impact of cancer on both young and old Nigerians, stating that “cancer care is our passion.”
Hon. Magaji commended NICRAT’s management for its efforts in tackling cancer but urged the agency to demonstrate capacity in utilising budgeted funds effectively.
He emphasised the need for strategic investment in equipment, research, and awareness campaigns to improve cancer care nationwide.
“Cancer care is our passion. That is why, in 2025, you can see a significant increase in the budget for cancer. However, you must show readiness and capacity to procure necessary equipment and utilize funds judiciously,” he stated.
The lawmaker stressed that the National Assembly remains dedicated to ensuring that cancer care receives the attention it deserves, particularly for the benefit of poor and vulnerable Nigerians.
“No one here has been untouched by cancer, whether through family, friends, or acquaintances. It affects us all. As the agency responsible for tackling this disease, you must rise to the occasion,” he charged NICRAT.
Hon. Magaji expressed confidence in NICRAT’s ability to address the country’s cancer burden, urging the institute to take bold steps in repositioning itself as a leading force in cancer prevention, treatment, and research.
He further assured NICRAT of the National Assembly’s continued support, urging the agency to explore partnerships with research organisations and alternative funding sources while assuring that lawmakers would advocate for necessary backing.
“This Institute has come to stay. While we aim for self-sufficiency, collaboration with research organizations is key. Where you need our voice, we will gladly step in to strengthen the fight against cancer,” he added.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for prioritising cancer care, citing the government’s move to procure advanced medical equipment, including Pepscan and Cyclotron, as evidence of progress.
“We may not be where we should be yet, but we have made significant strides. Our commitment remains firm in ensuring NICRAT succeeds in providing quality cancer care for Nigerians. Let us know the challenges you face so we can intervene and ensure effective service delivery,” he assured.
Earlier, NICRAT’s Director-General, Prof. Usman Malami Aliyu, expressed appreciation for the committee’s support, noting that NICRAT has benefited greatly from its collaboration with the House of Representatives.
He revealed that NICRAT was strengthening cancer care in the country through partnerships with local and international organisations in research, training, and manpower development.
“In 2024, we trained over 1,200 oncology professionals across the country, and we plan to train even more in 2025,” Prof. Malami disclosed.
