Civil Society Coalition for the Defence of Democracy in Nigeria (CSO-CODDIN) has berated the national president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, over his threat to embark on strike if the suspended senator representing Kogi South Senatorial district in the National Assembly, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, was not recalled.

The coalition, in a press conference at the weekend in Abuja, by its spokesperson, Comrade Peter Nwokolo, described the threat as an assault on democracy and undue interference in the judiciary’s role of adjudication, adding that the judiciary should be allowed to determine the matter.

It condemned Ajaero’s meddlesomeness and partisanship in the matter and urged him to channel his energy into addressing serious national issues such as hunger, insecurity, and the welfare of Nigerian workers.

The coalition accused Ajero of becoming a willing tool in the hands of desperate politicians whose interest it now panders to.

However, it called on the NLC president to resign from office and join politics rather than romance with politicians and interfere with Senate matters.

“That the matter is still before a court of competent jurisdiction and therefore sub judice, we consider the actions of Comrade Joe Ajaero, president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, threatening to embark on an indefinite strike if the senator is not recalled as an unsavoury assault on the principle of democracy and undue interference in the judiciary’s role to adjudicate on National issues

“It has now become evident that the Joe Ajero-led NLC has constituted itself into an embarrassment, leaving a sour taste in the mouths of many Nigerians,” he said.
