The National Institute for Sports (NIS) is on a clear path to becoming a world-class institution, according to its Director General, Comrade Philip Shaibu.
Mr. Shaibu made the announcement during the convocation ceremony for the 2025 Basic Certificate Coaching Course, held at the NIS premises within the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
Comrade Shaibu highlighted the significant steps taken by the NIS to achieve global standards, including a comprehensive review of its courses. “We have not yet solidified our foundation, despite what many consider success,” he stated. “However, we have established a 10-year working plan to reposition the NIS as a global institute, which will eventually transform into a university. The starting point for this transformation is the processes I have streamlined.”
He elaborated on the curriculum changes and course revitalisation efforts, confirming that the institute has “cleaned up the basics” and is progressing through certificate and diploma programmes before introducing degree courses.
Chief Barrister Paul Edeh, Chairman of the Benue State Football Association, praised Mr. Shaibu’s efforts. “What you have done today reminds me of what Benue people represent, the food basket of the nation,” Edeh remarked, likening the graduation to a successful harvest.
Coach Abdulwahab Bello of Kapital Waves, one of the 474 coaches from Nigeria and other African countries awarded Basic Coaching Certificates, commended the NIS for its robust programme, stating it would significantly aid grassroots sports development.
Dignitaries present at the ceremony included Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission; Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation; Adeboye Adeyinka, Senior Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Grassroots Sports Development; and Comrade Isaiah Benjamin, President of the Sports Writer’s Association of Nigeria.
