In a significant development for Nigerian sports, the National Institute for Sports (NIS) has officially commenced operations across all six of Nigeria’s geopolitical zones. This expansion, a cornerstone of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, marks a pivotal moment for sports development and youth empowerment in the nation.
The NIS will now operate in the South-South (Edo), South-East (Enugu), South-West (Ogun), North-Central (Plateau), North-East (Adamawa), and North-West (Kaduna) regions. This move paves the way for academic programmes to begin in April, promising to elevate sports education and training nationwide.
Comrade Philip Shaibu, the Director-General and CEO of the National Institute for Sports, who disclosed this in a statement released on Monday by his SA media, Ben Ogbemodia, emphasised the institute’s full commitment to this national mission. Shaibu, the immediate past Deputy Governor of Edo State, highlighted that the decentralisation was achieved through strategic partnerships with the respective state governors, ensuring sports development, talent identification, and youth empowerment reach every corner of Nigeria.
The initiative, which comes 52 years after the NIS’s inception, is being lauded as a testament to President Tinubu’s foresight and leadership. His dedication to youth empowerment, national unity, and sustainable development provides the foundation for Shaibu’s transformative work.
This achievement is seen as a triumph for both President Tinubu’s “Nigeria-first” agenda and the NIS. Stakeholders, including those in the National Assembly and sports enthusiasts, have reportedly expressed admiration for Shaibu’s relentless drive to reposition Nigeria in the global sports arena.
As the NIS prepares for its April academic programmes, the nation anticipates the positive impact of this initiative, driven by the vision and leadership of Philip Shaibu, and made possible by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to national progress.
