The National Sports Commission (NSC) has commended the Nigerian Boxing Federation (NBF) for its excellent organisation of the ongoing National Boxing Week and Commonwealth Games open trials in Lagos.

The Director-General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, lauded the NBF’s efforts during his visit to the event on Tuesday.

Mr Olopade praised the NBF leadership for their unwavering commitment to the comprehensive development of boxing. This includes the crucial training of officials and coaches, alongside fostering an environment where boxers can refine their skills.

Witnessing several bouts at the Brai Ayonote Boxing Gym within the National Stadium in Surulere, Mr Olopade expressed his optimism regarding Nigeria’s prospects at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

“I am thrilled at the grit and techniques of these young boxers; their moves and knowledge of the sport are truly heartwarming to note. I am sincerely excited about our nation’s prospects at the boxing event at the Commonwealth Games.”

To further motivate the athletes, the Director-General announced a significant increase in the number of boxing slots for the Glasgow Games.

“Based on all I have seen today, I am confident that boxing stands a better chance to secure more podium placements at the Commonwealth Games; hence, we have decided to increase the number of our pugilists for the Games.”

The NSC has also assured the NBF of its continued support beyond the boxing week, including comprehensive camping programmes for the boxers in preparation for the Commonwealth Games.

Currently, 120 boxers, both domestic and those from the diaspora, are participating in the Commonwealth Games open trials in Lagos. The popular event, which commenced on Sunday, 1st March, will conclude with a grand finale on Friday, 6th March.
