The Nigerian Navy has contained a major fire outbreak at the Nigerian Correctional Service Quarters, Kirikiri, Apapa, Lagos State.

This prevented further destruction and safeguarded lives.

The naval spokesperson, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, said the incident occurred at about 11:00 p.m. on 22nd April, 2026, when a fire broke out in a residential building within the quarters.

According to him, preliminary reports indicate the fire may have started after a gas cylinder exploded, leading it to spread rapidly to an adjacent building.

However, the personnel from Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) WEY, in collaboration with the Naval Ordnance Depot (NOD), swiftly deployed two fire trucks to the scene.

“Through a coordinated rapid firefighting effort, the naval team contained the blaze and prevented it from spreading further before the arrival of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

“Although two buildings in the vicinity were burnt and properties were lost, no casualties were recorded as of the time of this report,” he said

In a statement he issued yesterday, Navy Captain Folorunsho said the Nigerian Navy High Command commended the professionalism, courage and rapid response of its personnel, whose timely intervention averted what could have escalated into a wider disaster.

“This incident underscores the importance of fire safety awareness and strict adherence to preventive measures,” he said

Folorunsho reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to providing aid to civil authorities, making its logistical capacity available for emergency response operations wherever called upon to safeguard life and property.
