The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has invited forty of the nation’s top pugilists to a crucial training camp in Lagos, as they intensify preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The forty boxers, comprising twenty men and twenty women across all weight categories, were largely finalists from the recent National Boxing Open Trials held in February.
Official invitations have been dispatched to the selected athletes, coaches, and technical staff. The camp is set to open on Friday, May 1st, with training sessions commencing the following day at the Lieutenant General Kenneth Minimah (Rtd) boxing hotel at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.
Babatunde Laguda, Chairman of the NBF’s technical committee, emphasised the federation’s commitment to optimal preparation. “The NBF board, under the leadership of Hon. Wale Edun, has prioritised early camping for every international event,” Laguda stated. “This phase of the trials is very crucial because from the forty boxers we have invited, the ten that will fly Nigeria’s flag in Glasgow, Scotland, will emerge.”
Hon. Omonlei Imadu, Vice President of the NBF, reiterated the federation’s ambitious goal of “Ten boxers, ten medals.” He added, “The model for picking athletes for international events has changed under our watch; it’s no longer business as usual for the journeymen in the squared ropes sports. The National Sports Commission (NSC) has given us a mandate ahead of the Commonwealth Games, and to deliver on this, we must ensure that the boxers who make the final list for Glasgow truly merit their inclusion.”
Nigeria is scheduled to field a team of ten boxers at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, which will run from July 23rd to August 3rd in Glasgow.
