NCCE Boss Urges Data-Driven Education Leadership

The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), Professor Paulinus Chijioke Okwelle, has called for a strategic reform of Nigeria’s education sector, anchored on effective administration and the use of data and technology to drive leadership decisions.
He made the call while delivering the keynote address at the Human Capital Development Conference organised by the Federal University of Education, Kontagora (FUEK), in Abuja.
The event, which drew key stakeholders from the education sector including provosts, registrars, bursars, and representatives of SSUCOEN, was supported by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
Professor Okwelle emphasised that solving the systemic challenges in Nigeria’s education system goes beyond increasing funding or improving infrastructure.
According to him, there is a pressing need for institutions to embrace visionary leadership, transparent governance, and administrative processes driven by data and innovation.
“Good governance in education is more than just policy; it requires integrity, accountability, and a commitment to inclusive practices that shape institutional culture. Administrators must be equipped to lead with technology, apply data to decision-making, and manage with emotional intelligence.”
The NCCE boss also spoke on the importance of institutional harmony, pointing out that disputes in academic settings are inevitable but can be managed through dialogue, negotiation, and strategic conflict resolution. He noted that such approaches not only prevent disruptions but also open opportunities for institutional reforms.
Professor Okwelle further reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to guiding colleges of education through reforms that promote innovation, ICT integration, and modern monitoring systems. He praised SSUCOEN’s role in maintaining industrial harmony, encouraging the union to continue its advocacy in a constructive and solution-focused manner.
Also speaking at the event, Chairman of the occasion, Professor Francis Adedayo Faduyile, stressed that institutions must deliberately invest in leadership development and create environments that foster unity and professional growth.
He described transparent communication and conflict resolution as essential tools for repositioning Nigeria’s colleges of education.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor of FUEK, Professor Faruk Rashid Haruna, who served as Chief Host, welcomed participants and lauded TETFund for its consistent investment in human capital development.
He said the conference was timely and necessary, noting that strong administrative frameworks and peaceful conflict management are central to educational transformation.
“As we gather here, the goal is not just to talk, but to build meaningful partnerships, exchange ideas, and craft sustainable strategies that will reshape our institutions,” Haruna said.
