The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has commenced the process of establishing a dedicated Department of Assistive Technology to aid the activities of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

This significant development was disclosed by the commission’s executive secretary, Dr James David Lalu, during a virtual meeting with local innovators in assistive technology on Tuesday. The event coincided with the inaugural World Day of Assistive Technology, celebrated on June 4, 2024.

The virtual meeting provided a platform for innovators to showcase their inventions and explore opportunities for large-scale production. The newly established department will coordinate and implement assistive technology solutions, with a strong focus on local manufacturing.

A statement signed by the Head of New Media, NCPWD, Faruq Gagarawa, said this initiative was a key component of Dr Lalu’s 8-point inclusive transformation agenda, precisely the second item on the agenda, which seeks to position assistive technology as a vital and profitable sector in Nigeria.

“The NCPWD remains committed to enhancing the lives of persons with disabilities through innovative and locally-produced technological solutions,” Gagarawa added.
