Aid agencies have long warned about the risk of food shortages in northeast Nigeria because of the conflict, which has killed at least 20,000 since 2009 and left more than 2.6 million homeless. In July, the United Nations said nearly 250,000 children under five could suffer from severe acute malnutrition this year in Borno state alone and one in five -- some 50,000 -- could die. / AFP PHOTO / STEFAN HEUNIS

NCRMIDP Federal Commissioner, Hon. Tijjani Aliyu Ahmed who led the delegation to Katsina for the disbursement to the beneficiaries at the weekend, first paid a courtesy visit on Governor Umaru Dikko Radda in his office.

Ahmed informed the governor about the activities of the Commission, especially its plan to establish entrepreneurship training centers across the geopolitical zones of the country.

Expressing concern over the activities of bandits in the state that have increased the numbers of internally displaced persons (IDPs) daily, Ahmed disclosed that government intended to empower the IDPs to be self-reliant and reduce inter-dependence.

He said the Commission has already trained about 120 displaced children, while 70 mothers were also given starter-pack capital to have good living and construct solar power boreholes in their camps.

The Federal Commissioner sought the collaboration of the state government to put to use the abundant IDPs settlement center built recently from which he said the activities of bandits were getting people scared.

He thanked the state government for its efforts in providing succor to the IDPs as well as combating the menace of banditry in the state.

Remarking, Governor Radda thanked the Commission for supporting the women, stressing that his administration is already committed to the concerns of the people.

Radda also told his guests that the government has entered into a partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), including the Refugees Commission with a bid to alleviating the hardships faced by IDPs and fostering sustainable solutions for their reintegration and empowerment.
