The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has dismissed reports of a conflict between its managing director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, and the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, describing them as baseless and mischievous.

In a statement released by the commission’s director of Corporate Affairs, Seledi Thompson-Wakama, the NDDC clarified that Dr. Ogbuku enjoys a cordial relationship with Chief Wike and other leaders and stakeholders in the Niger Delta region.

“The false reports, which claimed there is unrest in the Commission over the position of Managing Director, are merely attempts by mischief-makers to sow discord among NDDC board members and create unnecessary tension,” Thompson-Wakama said.

The commission also addressed rumours linking former Delta State governor, Chief James Ibori, to an alleged bid for the position of managing director, dismissing the speculation as part of efforts to destabilize the NDDC.

Thompson-Wakama noted that the current NDDC Governing Board, led by chairman Mr. Chiedu Ebie and Dr. Ogbuku, was appointed for a four-year tenure beginning on August 29, 2023. She emphasized that the tenure is legally backed and not up for contestation.

“Dr. Ogbuku’s reappointment is fully in line with the provisions of the NDDC Establishment Act, which allows board members, other than ex-officio members, to hold office for a four-year term, renewable once,” the statement reads.

Despite the distractions, the commission highlighted its ongoing efforts to implement innovative policies and deliver key projects aimed at uplifting the Niger Delta region. Several projects are reportedly lined up for commissioning in the coming week.

“The NDDC is leveraging technology to enhance accountability and efficiency while engaging stakeholders proactively to ensure development in the region. We urge all well-meaning individuals to support this mission and reject attempts by detractors to derail progress,” Thompson-Wakama added.

The NDDC assured the public of its unwavering commitment to fulfilling President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for the development of the Niger Delta region and vowed to remain focused on delivering impactful projects and initiatives.
