The North East Development Commission (NEDC), in collaboration with the Bauchi State government, has commenced a week-long training for 600 teachers and school managers across Bauchi State.

The training focuses on effective teaching and learning strategies, including school and classroom management, guidance and counseling, English language proficiency, and quality assurance methodologies.

Speaking at the opening ceremony for 200 teachers from the Bauchi South Senatorial District, held at Zaranda Hotel in Bauchi yesterday, the newly appointed NEDC Bauchi State coordinator, Alhaji Aliyu Isiyaku, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to improving teaching methods.
He emphasised the importance of deepening teachers’ understanding of scientific concepts and fostering a community of educators dedicated to inspiring the next generation of scientists and thinkers.
According to Isiyaku, “The NEDC recognises that education is the cornerstone of sustainable development and peacebuilding in Nigeria.”

He noted that the North-East region has faced significant setbacks due to the Boko Haram insurgency, which has severely affected education, infrastructure, and access to quality learning.
He added that the commission has made strategic commitments to prioritise the rehabilitation, reconstruction, and enhancement of the education sector as part of its broader recovery and development strategy.

On his part, the chairman of the Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Alhaji Adamu Mohammed Duguri, expressed concern that while the state government is investing heavily in education, many teachers are not living up to their responsibilities.

Represented by the director of School Services, Zuhairu Usman, Duguri urged teachers to remain committed to their duties and to focus on the subjects they are trained to teach.

He also encouraged them to step down the knowledge gained from the training to their colleagues in other schools. Duguri commended the NEDC for organising the training, describing it as a valuable initiative that will significantly enhance teachers’ performance.

Also speaking, Dr. Auwal Haruna, a training consultant from Global Stallion Integrated Services Nigeria, who was responsible for the training in Bauchi South Senatorial District, explained that 200 teachers were selected from each of the three senatorial zones, making a total of 600 participants from across the state.

Dr. Haruna said the initiative is part of the NEDC’s effort to empower teachers across the North-East geopolitical zone. He stated that similar training is being conducted in other states, with 600 teachers selected per state.

He explained that the training aims to improve teaching delivery in core subjects such as science, technology, mathematics, English, and agriculture among others.

“In addition to academic content, the training focuses on school management, classroom discipline, and guidance and counseling. In cases where students are dealing with trauma or emotional issues, teachers are being trained to recognise such needs and organise appropriate counselling sessions,” Dr. Haruna added.
