The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) and the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have joined forces to safeguard the personal and corporate data of registered exporters in the country. The initiative aims to protect sensitive information to ensure Nigerian businesses remain competitive in global trade.
NEPC’s executive director/CEO, Nonye Ayeni, announced the partnership during a meeting with NDPC’s national commissioner/CEO, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, in Abuja.
Ayeni emphasised the need to protect Nigerian exporters’ data, given the large number of businesses fulfilling international contracts for Made-in-Nigeria products. She noted that data protection is essential to maintaining competitiveness and attracting positive endorsements from the international community, which could boost Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into Nigeria.
In response, Dr. Olatunji highlighted the NDPC’s role in ensuring data privacy, securing safe transactions, and preventing data manipulation. He encouraged NEPC to establish a dedicated data protection and control unit to ensure compliance with global data protection standards.
Olatunji further pledged NDPC’s support in providing capacity-building programs to ensure NEPC officers are equipped to manage data protection in line with global best practices.
