The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has vowed to ensure strict environmental compliance in the deployment of Nigeria’s ambitious 90,000km fibre optic network.
NESREA’s director-general, Innocent Barikor, made this commitment while receiving a delegation from European companies, Consulting & Management and Europe Ltd, in Abuja.
The firms are working on the European Union-funded project aimed at expanding digital infrastructure and improving digital literacy across Nigeria.
Dr. Barikor emphasized that all telecommunications infrastructure must adhere to environmental regulations, ensuring due diligence is conducted before the project commences.
He also stressed the importance of public sensitization on the environmental impact of such developments.
Leading the delegation, Prof. M.T. Ladan assured NESREA that the project team is prioritising environmental compliance, particularly through a thorough Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
The visit to NESREA was part of ongoing stakeholder consultations to align the project with regulatory requirements.
With NESREA’s commitment, the project is set to advance with a focus on sustainable infrastructure deployment, balancing technological progress with environmental protection.
