Netizens have described Afrobeats artistes Adekunle Gold and Davido’s latest collaboration ‘Only God Can Save Me’, as a ‘married men’s confession’.
Released February 12 on a joint YouTube Channel by the two artistes, ‘Only God Can Save Me’ talks about a man surrounded by a bevy of beautiful women whilst trying to keep from temptation.
Chorus: “Only God can save me. How do I look away when these fine girls want me? Life is for living. Something must kill a man, Baba shamma o mi. Baba shamma sho mi.
The two verses, as sung by Adekunle Gold and Davido, respectively, focus the “tempted’s” gaze on the high cost of having ‘wingers’ and the avoidance of their drama as deterrents to infidelity.
However, he doesn’t hesitate to hype himself as ‘a fine boy’ through no fault of his own.
See verse 1:
Adekunle: “You are such a beautiful liar. Don’t cry me a river, just like the others. You are taking it too far. I get a goalkeeper; I just want a winger.”
Verse 2, Davido: “Who says love don’t cost a thing, never go market. In this expensive dating pool, got me spending like a fool. If you are looking for love, I be the wrong one. I am far gone, you no fit dey where I dey mi oh! come on. I don’t need to talk I be fine boy. No be my fault, e no de matter, e do matter.”
Netizens reading more meaning into the song dubbed it a ‘married men’s confession’, stating:
