The Barayan Ungo, Hon. Innocent Ogeh Lagi, has called for cultural exposure and exploration in order to curb stereotyping and biases occasioned by limited interaction and a lack of understanding among people.

Hon. Lagi made the call shortly after the Ungo Traditional Council in Wamba local government area of Nasarawa State conferred the traditional title of ‘Barayan Ungo’ on him, in recognition of his contributions to the Ungo community.

The conferment, which held on April 4, 2026, was announced by the monarch of the community, Alhaji Yusuf Musa Ungo, in the presence of Oriye Ungo, Wamba Central.

“I have the honour and privilege to confer on you the traditional title of Barayan Ungo,” the monarch declared on behalf of the Ungo Traditional Council. The ceremony, attended by community leaders and dignitaries, featured a colourful display of tradition and cultural rites marking the formal installation of the new titleholder.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP, Hon. Lagi described the recognition as a call to greater service, while reflecting on how personal experiences have shaped his worldview. Recounting how some defining moments in his life have exposed him to a different cultural environment, he noted that the experience broadened his understanding of Nigeria’s diversity.

Hon. Lagi also highlighted how navigating unfamiliar environments, including moments of insecurity, strengthened his adaptability and perspective on national realities.

He emphasised that exposure remains critical in breaking stereotypes, stressing that many societal biases stem from limited interaction and a lack of understanding. Drawing from his international travels to countries such as Hungary, Taiwan, China, and the United Arab Emirates, he noted the value of observing different systems, cultures, and levels of development.

He said such experiences not only broaden perspectives but also foster empathy and better human relations. The traditional titleholder urged young Nigerians to embrace mobility and cultural engagement, describing travel and exposure as essential tools for personal growth and national cohesion. The event underscored the role of traditional institutions in recognising merit and promoting values that strengthen community identity and development.
