New leaders have emerged in the Abia State chapter of the Labour Party (LP). Among the leaders are representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

The new leadership which is chaired by Peter Azubuike, emerged in the party’s state congress conducted last weekend through a consensus option in Umuahia, the state capital,

At the event, the state governor, Alex Otti, commended members of the chapter for its peaceful and transparent conduct and congratulated the new leaders for their emergence.

“This is the beginning of a new era. Gone are the days when somebody will be pulling from one direction and another will be pulling from another direction. We will all pull together.

“One thing you can take for granted is that, like we have always done, we will support our party. We will support the new leadership of the party.

“If there is anything that you need, please feel free to let us know. We want a smooth take-off of the new administration”, said Otti, who is also the party’s national leader.

He also acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing leadership led by Sir Emmanuel Nweze-Oti and commended him for steering the party through its challenging period.

The coordinator of the congress, Chibuzo Okereke, said that it complied with regulatory requirements, and was monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“We have started that process since 23rd for the ward, and 24th for the local government , and today 25th for the state, and by 28th we will have the national convention,” he explained.

‎In his response Azubuike, expressed optimism about the party’s prospects in the 2027 general election, describing the option as being recognized in the Electoral Law and widely accepted.

‎He dismissed opposition threats and pledged to strengthen the party’s structure through aggressive membership mobilisation and expressed confidence that it would retain power in the state.

‎”We’re going to do very serious membership drives to ensure that if there are aspects of the state that are not yet captured by the party, we’ll make sure we go down to every nook and cranny,” he added.

‎While speaking earlier, the special adviser to Otti on Political Matters, Acho Obioma, said the option promotes inclusiveness to ensure representation and expressed satisfaction with its peaceful conduct.
