Undoubtedly, the wise counseling of the Emir of Ilorin and chairman of Kwara State Traditional Council, Alh Ibrahim Sulu- Gambari on the relocation of venue from the old site to Adewole Baseball Park, Ilorin, was the best thing that has happened to the annual Durbar of Ilorin Emirate.
The Emir, had hearken to the request of Ilorin indigenes in diaspora by approving the relocation of the venue of the annual durbar to a more spacious Baseball Park, Adewole, Ilorin.
The serenity of the Baseball Park’s environment, the expansive open space and the convenient seats in the Park, indeed justified the decision of the Emir on the relocation of the venue of Ilorin Durbar, which has gained international recognition.
The personal assistant to the Emir, Dr Murtala AbdulRaheem, had in a viral video said the relocation of the Durbar ‘s venue was the decision of the Emir.
He said the Emir approved the relocation of the venue from his palace’s forecourt to the Baseball Park, Adewole in response to the request of Ilorin indigenes in diaspora .
AbdulRaheem was emphatic that the decision to relocate the Durbar ‘s venue had no political coloration as being peddled in certain quarters.
Many residents, attendees and public affairs analysts unanimously agreed that the 2025 edition of Ilorin Emirate Durbar remains the best, in terms of convenience, security and turn out of people from within and outside Nigeria.
A public affairs analyst and media personality, Bolaji Aladie said:” Amid the whirlwind of accumulated stress and demands of life, I nearly missed the chance to partake in this year’s extraordinary edition of #IlorinEmirateDurbar.
“However, the spirit of Ilorin runs deep within me, compelling my soul to seek the strength and energy that rekindled my passion for this vibrant celebration. With renewed enthusiasm, I stepped out in elegance to join fellow Dahiris and the spirited Afẹ’lọrin-fẹre at the heart of the festivities.
“Despite the myriad of challenges that loomed over the event’s success, our resilience shone brightly through the unity fostered by our diversity. Together, we transcended every obstacle, creating an atmosphere filled with dazzling glitz and glamour that far surpassed previous editions.
“The remarkable crowd, impeccable organisation, and stunning venue combined with vibrant attire and a feast for the eyes made this event truly unforgettable. Each moment of joy and celebration will remain etched in memory until we gather once again for the next edition. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to our triumph! ”
Another respondent, Dr Afeez Abolore said:” Against all odds, the 2025 Ilorin grand Durbar stands out as the most remarkable in the history of Kwara State. Held at the Kwara Baseball Park in Adewole, Ilorin, the event drew thousands—not just from within Kwara but also from across Nigeria and beyond.
“What made this year’s Durbar exceptional was not only the cultural brilliance on display but the sheer scale of attendance by visitors, families, dignitaries, and foreigners who came to experience Ilorin’s heritage in full splendor.
“The massive turnout was no coincidence. It is a testament to the purposeful leadership of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq whose administration has transformed Ilorin—and indeed Kwara—into a beacon of development, hospitality, and pride. From improved road infrastructure within and outside the capital, to the construction and commissioning of two overhead bridges at the same time—pivotal in easing vehicular movement during seasons like this—his investments are shaping the rhythm of everyday life and celebration alike.”
Abolore who is the commissioner for Agriculture in the state added:” “Strategically, the Governor’s infrastructural vision extends far beyond convenience. The Kwara Innovation Hub, which recently partnered with Paystack, is positioning local startups to scale globally. The Kwara Garment Factory, already serving as a model replicated at the federal level, and the Sugar Factory Film Studio are redefining what local content and industrialization mean in the Nigerian context. These are not just projects—they are economic catalysts that inspire confidence among investors.
“Add to that the towering symbolic presence of the tallest Nigerian flag mast in West Africa, which doesn’t just inspire patriotism but attracts curious tourists and visitors to the state.
“These urban and tourism-driven investments—including the iconic International Conference Centre currently under construction along Ahmadu Bello Way, and the full-scale rehabilitation of Kwara Hotel to meet international standards—are repositioning Kwara as a tourism destination. Piece by piece, these initiatives form the architecture of a state preparing for a future that merges heritage with innovation.
“All of these fed into the success of the Durbar—a celebration that is no longer local but global in its appeal. Foreigners and non – Kwarans attended with their families, drawn by the promise of safety, beauty, and cultural authenticity. It is also important to acknowledge the role of the Ilorin Emirate Durbar Committee for their tireless efforts in curating an event of such magnitude and dignity. Their coordination, planning, and dedication gave structure to the colour and cultural rhythm that defined the day.
“Against the noise and distractions that surrounded the proposed pavilion at the Emir’s forecourt, the Durbar itself stood taller than controversy. Indeed, the 2025 edition recorded the highest attendance in its history, surpassing all previous years in participation and coordination. This was no coincidence—it was the product of vision backed by consistent action.
“In all of this, we cannot forget our father, the Emir of Ilorin, His Royal Highness Alhaji (Dr.) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, CFR, whose leadership and royal wisdom remain central to the preservation of Ilorin’s cultural identity and unity. His reign continues to be a source of inspiration and cohesion, making the Emirate a cultural lighthouse not just for Kwarans, but for the world.”
A travel and tourism expert, Mrs Faridah Sagaya said that efforts to generate global attention for the Ilorin Durbar have started yielding positive results.
“We promote it on the social media, through the press, and by inviting influencers. CNN award-winning travel journalist, Pelu Awofeso was here in 2023, alongside the iconic Goge Africa Team. Last year, we welcomed groups such as Nigeria Tourism Lovers, Authentic Cyclist, and other tourism promoters. This year, the Goge Africa Team is back, and they were joined by Mr. Muyiwa Omololu of TravelScope Magazine to cover the entire event,” she said.
LEADERSHIP reports that the Kwara State s government under the leadership of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq who is also the Sardauna of Ilorin, had in its efforts to make the attendees of the Durbar comfortable provided additional 3,000 seats in the Baseball Park; one thousand for diginitaries and 2,000 for others.
The security arrangement in and outside the venue was also super. There were also enough parking spaces for vehicles as the adjoining schools’ fields – Government High School, Ilorin, SUBEB Model School and others were opened for the attendees to park their vehicles.
The men of Kwara State Road Transport Management Agency ( KWARTMA) did a good job, controlling traffic in and outside the main venue of the event.
Little wonder, the chairman of the Ilorin Emirate Durbar Committee, Engr. Sulaiman Yahaya Alapansapa, poured encomiums on Governor AbdulRazaq for what he called the governor’s uncommon support for the committee since his assumption of office in 2019.
Alapansanpa said: ” Before I proceed, I must thank our Governor and Sardauna of Ilorin, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, CON, for supporting the festival since his assumption of office in 2019. I also felicitate with him on the numerous achievements of his administration in the last six years .
