The Mairiga Charity Foundation yesterday said it was able to distribute meat, bags of rice and cash during the celebration of the New Year 2025.
The founder of the organisation, Hajiya Mairiga Umar, in an interview with LEADERSHIP Friday in Damaturu, Yobe State capital, said the gesture, which has been ongoing for many years, is part of the foundation’s ways of felicitating with the needy, especially during festive periods.
Mairiga called on Christians and Muslims to uphold mutual tolerance and love, especially amidst the prevailing economic challenges, for peace and progress.
She said that, “ Every year, we try to put smiles on the faces of the needy in the society, most especially those living in IDPs camps during festive periods. Christian are our friends, brotherhood as well as we are living in the same place.”
The foundation distributed items like bags of rice, cash and clothing materials to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) during the period.
In his reaction, the representative of the Christians, Mr Emmeuel Degubi, said that the Foundation had made tangible interventions for the needy, including the distribution of rice, free cataract surgeries, and helping windows.
He also commended the founder of the foundation Hajiya Fatima Mairiga Umar for her gesture during this critical period.
He described Christmas and New Year as a time of light and love, emphasising its significance as a period for sharing joy and fostering happiness.
