Spain sensation Lamine Yamal has warned the football world that La Roja are ready to conquer New York after inspiring his country to the FIFA World Cup final.
The Barcelona winger played a decisive role as Spain defeated France 2-0 in the semi-final, winning the penalty that allowed Mikel Oyarzabal to open the scoring before Pedro Porro sealed victory after the break.
Following the historic win, Yamal celebrated on social media with a message inspired by Puerto Rican star Bad Bunny’s song NUEVAYoL.
“New York, we’re coming for you,” he wrote.
The final will take place at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday, where Spain will face either Argentina or England.
Spain have been the standout team of the tournament, remaining unbeaten throughout their campaign. Their only dropped points came in a goalless draw against Cape Verde during the group stage.
Dani Olmo, who provided the assist for Spain’s second goal against France, said the team always believed they had the quality to reach the final.
“It was written,” Olmo said during celebrations in the dressing room.
“We started in Atlanta and we end up in New York. We’re close… let’s go for it!”
Spain’s victory ended France’s hopes of reaching a third successive World Cup final after Les Bleus arrived as one of the tournament favourites having won their opening six matches.
Goalkeeper Unai Simón admitted the achievement had not yet fully sunk in.
“None of us in the dressing room have realised yet what we’re achieving,” he said. “It will sink in as the days go by.”
The triumph sends Spain back to the World Cup final for the first time since 2010, when Andrés Iniesta’s extra-time goal against the Netherlands secured their only global title.
Oyarzabal, meanwhile, joined Spanish legends David Villa and Emiliano Butragueño as one of the few players to score five goals in a single World Cup.
“We have earned the right to dream and have the title in our sights,” he said.
“If I can help the team in the final without scoring, I will be just as happy.”
Spain now stand one victory away from adding a second World Cup crown to their footballing history.
