Chess Olympiad: Nigeria’s Women Face Czech Test, Men Battle Malawi In Round 5

Nigeria’s men and women will return to action on Sunday as the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, enters its fifth round.

The women, who have collected five match points from two wins, a draw and a defeat, face the Czech Republic, while the men, with four match points from two victories and two losses, take on Malawi.

Both matches are scheduled for 3pm in Samarkand as the 11-round Swiss-system team competition gathers momentum.

Nigeria’s women have produced the stronger individual performances so far, with Michelle Chiamaka Nwankwo leading the team on 3½ points from four games.

Nwankwo has been particularly impressive, winning three games and drawing one to remain unbeaten.

Sandra Osarugue Omoruyi has also made a significant contribution with three points from four games, while Deborah Ebimobo-ere Quickpen has added two points.

The women opened their campaign with a 4-0 demolition of Mali before suffering a 3½-½ defeat to England in the second round.

They then drew 2-2 with Mozambique before responding with a convincing 3-1 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in Round Four.

Their Round Five opponents, the Czech Republic, also have five match points after four rounds, setting up a closely matched encounter.

The Nigerian men, meanwhile, will be seeking another strong response when they face Malawi.

They began the competition with a commanding 4-0 victory over New Caledonia before losing 3½-½ to Kazakhstan.

The team bounced back with a narrow 2½-1½ win over Saudi Arabia but suffered another setback in Round Four, losing 3-1 to Cuba.

Odion Aikhoje and Odey Goodness Ekunke have been among the team’s leading performers, with both players on 2½ points after four games.

Nigeria and Malawi both have four match points heading into their meeting, although Nigeria are currently placed above their opponents in the standings.

The Nigerian men will be looking to reproduce the form that earned them maximum points against New Caledonia and Saudi Arabia, while improving on the setbacks suffered against Kazakhstan and Cuba.

With seven rounds still to play, both Nigerian teams remain in contention for stronger positions as the Olympiad progresses.

Sunday’s Round Five encounters will provide another opportunity for the players to convert their individual performances into valuable team points.
