The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has paid tribute to Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, following his announcement on Thursday, December 4, 2025, of his immediate retirement from international football after a decade with the Super Eagles.
In a statement by Dr Ademola Olajire, Director of Communication, the NFF described Captain Troost-Ekong as a “dedicated, selfless and humble leader” of the Super Eagles since his international debut in 2015. He was lauded for his “gusto, zeal and patriotic fervour,” and for playing with “passion, pride, purpose and commendable sense of duty.”
Even before becoming captain, Troost-Ekong was noted for being “pleasant, disciplined and ambitious,” wearing the national colours with “joy, zest, and focus.”
His performances at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in 2019, 2021, and 2023 were highlighted as an example for younger players. His silver and bronze medals from the tournament, along with playing in the FIFA World Cup finals and scoring crucial goals for Nigeria, underscored a “fabulous journey.”
With 83 caps across five competitions, Troost-Ekong left as a “fulfilled man,” able to reflect on his decade-long service with “pride and a sense of accomplishment.” His three vital goals during the last AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, where Nigeria reached the final, earned him the well-deserved title of ‘Man of the Competition’ (Most Valuable Player of the Tournament).
The NFF extended its best wishes to William Troost-Ekong for his future endeavours and pledged its support to help him achieve his goals within football.
