A non-governmental organisation (NGO), International Alert Nigeria (IAN), has expressed concern over the living conditions of seaside dwellers in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region facing the devastating impacts of oil and gas exploration by oil firms.
Consequently, working with the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, it has carried out a series of multi-stakeholder engagements and community visits across some affected communities in Akwa Ibom State as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration, assess community needs, and promote inclusive development.
The engagements, which took place in Eastern Obolo and surrounding communities, included courtesy visits to key private sector stakeholders, traditional institutions, and community leaders.
The visits, LEADERSHIP gathered, provided an opportunity for direct interaction with local actors, enabling government and partners to better understand community realities and identify priority areas for intervention.
During a courtesy visit to Sterling Group/Sumeda Energy, discussions focused on the role of private sector actors in supporting local development. Company representatives highlighted ongoing contributions, including employment opportunities for community members and the implementation of social responsibility initiatives in healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
The delegation also paid visits to traditional rulers and community leadership structures, where discussions centred on local development challenges, peacebuilding, and the need for increased government presence. Community representatives raised concerns around infrastructure deficits, limited access to basic services, and the importance of inclusive participation in development processes.
Speaking during the engagements, the minister of Humanitarian Affairs emphasised the value of direct community interaction in shaping responsive policies.
“There is a difference when you come to see things for yourself. It provides clearer insight and ensures that our interventions are aligned with the real needs of the people,” the Minister stated.
The country Director of International Alert Nigeria Dr Kingsley Udo, also highlighted the importance of collaboration in driving sustainable development, stressing that “partnerships between government, communities, and the private sector are essential to delivering inclusive and impactful interventions.”
“The series of engagements underscores International Alert Nigeria’s commitment to fostering partnerships that support sustainable development, strengthen community resilience, and promote inclusive dialogue between government, private sector actors, and local communities,” he stated.
