A non-governmental organisation, the Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has solicited the collaboration of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to track constituency projects in the budget.
The body’s Programme Officer, Mr Omoniyi Adenoye made the call for the support on Tuesday, when he led his team on a courtesy visit to the Kano State office of the anti-graft agency.
Adenoye who lauded the activities of the Commission, said its support will help to ensure that constituency projects are effectively delivered by the lawmakers for the wellbeing of the nation.
The Programme Officer expressed sadness over misappropriation of projects funds, saying more efforts need to be put in place to monitor the trends.
He further described as ridiculous an instance where N500 million is spent on building palace for a traditional ruler at a time that majority of Nigerians are hungry.
Speaking on the budget padding controversy in the Senate, Adenoye described the incident as disturbing while urging for measures to tackle the menace.
“We acknowledge your support and the sacrifice you have been making to ensure that we achieve our mandate. We must commend your tireless efforts and we solicit for more,” the Programmes Officer said.
The Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner in the state, Barr. Ibrahim Garba, appreciated the visitors and assured them of the Commission’s support.
He added that, for success to be achieved in this trend, all hands needed to be put on deck without bias or selfish interest.
“We are ever ready to assist you with needed information with a view to curtail corrupt practices and other related Offences,” Garba assured.
