A non-governmental organisation (NGO), Sentinel Oasis for Love and Care Initiative (SOLCI), has trained about 120 youths in Jos North local government area of Plateau State on servant-leadership to address age long leadership deficits in Nigeria.
SOLCI also acknowledged that youth unemployment, social fragmentation, violence, substance abuse and declined moral values are realities that left many young people without positive role model, purposeful mentorship or opportunities to develop into responsible leaders.
During cohorts 1 and 2 Sentinel reunion meeting, SOLCI’s trustee/executive director, Barr. Haroun Audu, said they believe that lasting societal transformation begins with a transformed people.
He revealed that the challenges of recurring social and religious tension led to increased segregation among communities within Jos North LGA for decades.
“Building trust and meaningful engagement across these divides has become increasingly difficult, especially among young people.
“As a faith-driven, youth- focused organisation committed to raising a generation of servant leaders who transform lives and communities through mentorship, leadership development and practical service.
“In 2025, we commenced the recruitment of young men and women aged 18 to 25 years old from 10 out of 20 wards in Jos North to be trained on servant leadership principles; namely, Tudun Wada, Jenta Adamu, Vanderpuye, Tafawa Balewa, Jenta Apata, Ali Kazaure, Sarkin Arab, Dutse Ukulele and Gang are wards.
“These were made up of 6 persons, 3 girls and 3 boys from each ward as the pioneer cohort. The training successfully held on 29th May, 2025.
“In June 2026, we repeated the same cycle, recruited and trained another set of 6 young persons, 3 girls and 3 boys from the remaining 10 wards in Jos North local government area; namely, Ahwol, Amanzah, Abba Na Shehu, Ibrahim Katsina, Lamingo, Naraguta ‘A’, Naraguta ‘B’, Rigiza/Targwong, Anguwan Rogo/Rimi and Jos Jarawa wards respectively”, Audu stated.
The executive director also stated that, ” having undergone the SOLCI servant leadership training, these young ones are now the vanguard of advocates for positive change in their various wards within Jos North local government, Plateau State and Nigeria.
“The double standard we have laid is what is leading us to where we are today. Therefore, as servant leaders you’re a change agent of the society, sacrifice yourself, be courageous and always standing for the vulnerable”, he added.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Hannah Musa, a keynote speaker who doubled as lead trainer, tasked participants to remain courageous, steadfast, committed and accountable in moving from intention to action as servant leaders.
Similarly, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), TADS Kitchen Jos, Mrs. Timbyen Dashe outlined five reminders for Sentinels as they navigate trenches of servant leadership. These includes; purpose, excellence, dignity values as well as access.
