The National Institute for Educational Planning (NIEPA) Ondo is training teachers, principals and head teachers of Junior Secondary Schools in Kano and Jigawa on effective school management in the 21st century.
In his address, the director general and chief executive of NIEPA, Dr. David Shofoyeke who was represented by Dr Sunday Adegbesan explained that school leadership is key in turning the quality of basic education around and providing enabling environment for unhindered access, retention and completion with meaningful learning outcomes.
“This includes inculcating life skills for useful living”, he added.
He expressed the need for training of the head teachers, education officers and principals which he described as an effective tool in managing and delivery of education.
“The head teachers, education officers and principals who manage basic education are professionals and are good, but they require further development to become more effective in the management and delivery of the common good to enhance the achievements of the objectives of the renewed hope agenda of president Bola Ahmed Tinubu on basic education for Nigeria,” he stated.
Addressing newsmen at the event, Adegbesan explained that NIEPA was in Kano to strengthen the capacity of head teachers and principals on school management, who will in turn step down the training to their staff in the schools.
“We are in Kano to strengthen the capacity of head teachers and principals of JSS in Kano.
“This is an initiative of NIEPA and UBEC collaborating to train managers of primary schools and JSS in Kano and Jigawa states which covers the Northwest of the country,” he said.
He explained that at the end of the 5-Day training, the participants are expected to learn how to collaborate and develop team spirit with the staff of their schools.
They will learn how to promote school culture and how they can put their roles together to ensure that schools achieve perfect basic education in the state and in Nigeria.
On her part, the director Teacher Training, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) Kano, Hauwa Tanimu, who represented the chairman, Yusuf Kabir, said the training was handy and at the right time.
“What we expect of the leaders being trained here is to step down the same knowledge they have acquired to their teachers in schools in order to enhance the system.
“After the training we are going to go round all the schools to ensure that these knowledge acquired is put to proper use in the schools,” she stated.
