The Nigerian Embassy in Niger has debunked social media reports that its embassy building in Niamey had been attacked and burnt down amid the ongoing crisis in the country.

In a press statement issued on Friday, signed by Dr Liti I. Auwalu, on behalf of the Ambassador, the embassy acknowledged that protesters in the wake of the coup d’etat in Niger and ECOWAS stance, tried to gain entry into the Embassy on July 30 but “the Nigerien military and police authorities promptly curtailed the situation.”

“At the moment, the Embassy is well guarded by the Nigerien Military and other authorities. We reiterate that the videos are fake, and as such the general public is enjoined to disregard such videos,” it stated.

LEADERSHIP reports that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) chaired by Nigeria’s president, Bola Tinubu, directed its standing force to be on standby for possible action with the aim of reinstating constitutional order in Niger Republic.

Following the directive, coup leaders in Niger have threatened to kill ousted President Mohamed Bazoum if neighbouring countries attempt any military intervention to reinstate him by ECOWAS.
