Niger State commissioner for mineral resources, Hon. Muhammad Qasim Danjuma, has expressed concern over ongoing mining operations in the state without evidence of Community Development Agreement (CDA) and associated irregularities.
He stated this during an inspection visit to the Zuzungi mining site in Katcha local government area of the state to ascertain issues about mining activities in the state.
LEADERSHIP findings revealed that the visit was prompted by reports of widespread irregularities in the mining sector and attendant abuse of procedures and non-adherence to mining regulations.
Hon. Danjuma said the CDA was a mandatory requirement to be considered before issuance of a federal mining license, describing it as a critical component of social responsibility expected of any mining company before commencing operations.
“Unfortunately, we did not observe any sign of CDA implementation such as schools, electricity projects, healthcare facilities, boreholes or other community impact developments,” he said.
While stating that the absence of such initiatives was deeply disappointing, the commissioner revealed that the inspection uncovered multiple irregularities, including cases of encroachment as well as widespread illegal mining activities allegedly carried out in collaboration with some community leaders.
He said the ministry would engage a committee to review the findings and subsequently invite the affected communities for discussions, stressing that appropriate sanctions would be imposed where necessary.
Danjuma further disclosed that a mining company identified as Millennium Metals was found to be operating under a name different from the one used during its profiling with the ministry, describing it as suspicious and capable of generating conflict.
He debunked claims by some operators of having partnerships with the state government, noting that no such records exist.
He said efforts were required to reposition and revive the mineral sector in alignment with the vision of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.
He urged stakeholders to set aside personal interests and work collectively for the state.
“Niger State is abundantly blessed with vast mineral resources. If these resources are carefully and judiciously harnessed, they will unlock enormous opportunities, generate employment, and drive development. It is unfortunate that personal interests of a few stakeholders continue to obstruct the government’s mission,” he added.
