Residents of the Niger Delta have raised concern over the severe environmental damage caused by oil theft and illegal refining, describing the activities as major contributors to pollution, loss of livelihoods and declining public health across the region.
They, however, acknowledged ongoing efforts by the Nigerian military to curb the menace.
The position was expressed during rallies organised by the Niger Delta Peace & Security Forum on Thursday and Friday in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State and Port Harcourt, Rivers State where community leaders and stakeholders discussed the long-term impact of crude oil theft on farmlands, waterways, mangroves and air quality.
In a statement made available to LEADERSHIP in Abuja yesterday, while speaking at the rallies, Inko-Tariah Micheal, convener of the forum, said illegal bunkering and artisanal refining had for years led to frequent oil spills, soot pollution, destruction of aquatic life and contamination of drinking water sources, leaving many communities environmentally and economically vulnerable.
He noted that recent actions taken by the Nigerian military under the CDS to disrupt oil theft had helped reduce some harmful practices in affected areas, creating room for environmental recovery and improved community safety.
“Our concern has always been the environment and the wellbeing of our people,”Micheal said, “The steps being taken to address oil theft are important because they help limit further damage to our land and rivers, while also protecting national resources.”
Participants at the rallies emphasised that the fight against oil theft must be sustained with a strong focus on environmental protection, accountability, and community involvement. They called for closer collaboration between host communities, security agencies, environmental regulators, and the government to ensure lasting solutions.
The Niger Delta Peace & Security Forum urged that current efforts be complemented with environmental remediation, livelihood support programmes and transparent engagement with local communities to secure a cleaner and more sustainable future for the Niger Delta.
