The leader of the Hausa community, mostly affected by the disaster, Alhaji Tanko Bala and the secretary of the Mokwa local government area, Dauda Liman, who served as chairman of the relief committee on the Mokwa flood, disclosed this at the weekend.

Liman confirmed that “the committee has recorded 458 households, and each has received N1 million. Any victim that was not captured in the first and second batches would be included in the third batch.”

He added that they recorded 424 houses and shops destroyed, and the owners received N500,000 each, while 138 families of dead victims so far documented were given a million naira each, making a total of N808 million cash given aside other interventions.

Confirming the interventions given to the victims, the leader of Hausa community, Alhaji Tanko Bala, said “75-80% survivors of Mokwa flood have received interventions of food items and cash.”

He said the interventions were received from the Niger State government, donor agencies and individuals across the country.

” Those that have not received were about 20- 25 per cent, and those surviving victims that quickly rushed out of the town to the nearby villages, and those who left for their states of origin”, he declared.

The NSEMA director of Relief and Rehabilitation, Salihu Garba, hinted that the organisation’s success in handling the Mokwa disaster could be attributed to the synergy between NSEMA and community-based organisations.

He said that the complaints received from the victims were forwarded to the government for consideration.
