Niger Gov Dissolves NSIEC, Set To Submit Commissioners’ List

Niger State governor Mohammed Umar Bago has started dismantling commissions and boards as lobby intensifies for political appointments.

The governor yesterday directed the dissolution of the board of the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC).

Secretary to the state government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman disclosed that Governor Bago ordered the dissolution with effect from May 29, 2023.

He said, “Members of the commission were directed to hand over all property of the State Government in their possession to the most senior Director in the Commission with immediate effect.”

Meanwhile, Bago is set to release the commissioners and special advisers list, while politicians and others have intensified their lobbying.

LEADERSHIP gathered that some have taken their lobby to the senator representing Niger East, Senator Mohammed Sani Musa believed to have the ears of the governor and the immediate past governor Abubakar Sani Bello.

A source close to the governor hinted that “some have started choking the governor, but he has promised to base his appointments on competence and merit with due consultation.”
