In 2023, Nigeria emerged as the leading consumer of local food in the African market, marking a significant surge in local food orders, with a staggering 25-fold increase, as revealed in a survey conducted by Glovo.

Mrs. Lamide Akinola, the General Manager of Glovo Nigeria, disclosed these findings in the company’s annual report released on Friday in Lagos.

Highlighting the top products ordered, Akinola mentioned jollof rice, fried rice, asun rice, chicken, meat pie, and stir-fried spaghetti. She emphasized that Nigeria showcased an unwavering passion for its local cuisine, positioning itself as the fourth-largest global consumer of authentic local food.

“Despite the availability of other cuisines, Nigerians have exhibited an enduring love for local dishes, particularly jollof rice. In 2023, the demand for jollof rice soared, evident in a substantial increase in delivered orders compared to 2022. Additionally, chicken emerged as another highly sought-after dish,” Akinola stated.

She noted that the bulk of food orders were placed on Fridays, dominating the total weekly orders throughout 2023.

Akinola highlighted the substantial earning potential for couriers, stating that the highest-earning courier in 2023 earned N3,264,039. This underscores the opportunities Glovo offers to couriers in the diverse multi-category industry.
