Group general manager of Continental Hotel, Karl Hala, has described Nigeria as the “real cradle of humanity” with a rich cultural heritage that spans thousands of years.

At a tourism conference organised by Business Day in Lagos, themed “ People, Culture and Infrastructure Building Inclusive Tourism Models for Nigeria’s Growth,”  Karl highlighted the country’s ancient Nok terracotta art, powerful kingdoms like Benin and Oyo, and over 250 ethnic groups, each with rich customs, music, crafts, and languages.

He lamented that despite Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, many potential tourists still perceive the country as a risky destination. He added that our biggest barrier isn’t insecurity or infrastructure, but perception.

However, he expressed optimism that the nation’s youth can be a game-changer in promoting tourism and cultural heritage.

He says the hospitality and tourism industry is not just an economic sector but a national amplifier. “When guests feel welcome, safe, and inspired, they become ambassadors for Nigeria.

He called on Nigerians to own their narrative and showcase the country’s rich cultural heritage to the world.

Karl’s speech was ideally a call to action for Nigerians to take pride in their cultural heritage and to work towards promoting the country’s tourism potential.

He emphasised the importance of developing the country’s tourism industry, which has the potential to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic growth and development.

“Nigeria’s youth is the country’s unknown superpower. “Over 60 per cent of our population is under 25. That’s not a statistic — it’s an army of dreamers, doers, coders, chefs, guides, entrepreneurs, artists,” he said.

The hospitality guru called on Nigerians to train and empower their youth to create industries and promote tourism.

He appreciated the invite, saying the conference provided a platform for stakeholders in the sector to discuss ways of promoting Nigeria’s tourism potential.
