Leaders of the Labour Party (LP) have urged Nigerians to grab the rare opportunity the 2023 general election presents and take the decisive step to extricate the country from life-support.
The leaders made up of Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi, Prof Pat Utomi and Dr David Mbamara, who spoke in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, said with the near collapse of the country, it is clear it is in desperate situation that requires urgent fixing.
Senator Onyewuchi who represents Imo East senatorial district in the Senate, in his speech, argued that the sorry state of the country is a consequence of perennial leadership failure.
The Labour Party senatorial candidate for Owerri Zone in the 2023 election, while noting that leadership is everything, expressed regret that the country has been a victim of the plague of bad leadership for a greater part of its existence.
Onyewuchi insisted that sustained visionless leadership, whose only visible achievement remains the elevation of corruption to state policy, has put the country in its present messy situation.
The lawmaker also expressed serious concern over alarming insecurity in the country, pointing out that the country today is practically under the grip of non-state actors who have taken over a greater percentage of the country’s landmass, making road travel a very dangerous step to take.
He said the only option left for Nigerians is to retake and rebuild the nation and align with the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi and vote for him massively in 2023.
According to him, it was clear from the utterances and actions of the three presidential candidates, that Mr Peter Obi is not only the one with a well-articulated roadmap of turning the country from consumption to production, but also contesting with an outstanding track record of performance garnered as former governor of Anambra State.
Onyewuchi lauded Nigerians for the massive love and support shown to Peter Obi, and called for the same to be extended to all candidates of LP as they will also play important roles in the implementation of his policies when elected.
Utomi stressed that leadership is the pursuit of immortality, but regretted that the present crop of leaders careless about that ideal.
According to him, it was because of their clear grasp of this philosophy, that past leaders who left indelible legacies, like Dr Michael Okpara and Chief Sam Mbakwe were able to soar higher, pointing out that this is the reason their names still resonate decades after their demise.
The founder of Lagos Business School said Nigeria is a nation of endless possibilities and expressed regret that the potentials remained unrealized as a result of perennial bad leadership.
He expressed optimism that the Labour Party is prepared to turn things around for good and urged the citizenry to support the party.
In his remarks, Dr Mbamara, South East coordinator of Rescue Nigeria Project, flayed the ruling AII Progressives Congress (APC) over what he termed its insult on Nigerians sensibilities with its 2023 presidential quest.
He argued that having taken Nigeria to its lowest level, since its existence as evidenced by the six months of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike, the party has no moral right to contest 2023 elections.
