Nigeria To Host Historic Commonwealth Fencing Championships

Nigeria is set to make history by hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships, marking the first time an African nation will stage this prestigious event.

Scheduled to take place in Lagos from 9th to 14th August, the championships will feature competitions across senior, veterans, and under-23 categories.

Adeyinka Samuel, President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, confirmed that preparations are progressing well, encompassing venue selection, logistics, athlete services, and partnerships. “Over 24 Commonwealth nations have registered to participate,” he stated, adding that an international training camp will also be held in Lagos prior to the championships.

“We are on track to deliver a world-class event that showcases Nigeria’s capability to host major international tournaments,” Samuel remarked. He emphasised the significance of Nigeria’s selection, noting that this is the first time the championships will be held on African soil.

The bidding process lasted over 10 months, with Nigeria emerging victorious over Australia, the home of the federation’s headquarters. Samuel highlighted the united support from African Commonwealth nations, which bolstered Nigeria’s bid.

Regarding sponsorship, Samuel indicated that the federation aims to position the event as a platform for youth development, engagement, and sports diplomacy. Key partners backing the championships include Rugby School Nigeria, Flour Mills of Nigeria, and World Abilitysport.

However, he called for enhanced government support to complement private sector contributions for a successful hosting. Samuel underscored that Nigeria’s event will stand out through developmental initiatives, cultural showcases, and exceptional hospitality.

The inclusion of para fencing is set to promote inclusivity, with support from World Abilitysport and other stakeholders. He assured that the championships, sanctioned by Commonwealth Sport through the Commonwealth Fencing Federation, will adhere to global standards.

Expressing confidence in Nigerian athletes, Samuel noted their improved performances following recent international exposure. The championships will be held at Rugby School Nigeria in Lagos, chosen for its modern facilities and proximity to hospitality centres.NAN
