Nigeria will be the stage for a significant tennis showdown as Nigeria prepares to host Uzbekistan in the 2026 Davis Cup World Group II Play-Offs. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has scheduled the tie for 7-8 February at the historic Lagos Lawn Tennis Club 1895.

The Nigerian squad, featuring Adeleye Daniel, Emmanuel Michael, Bulus Christopher, Abua Canice, and Alafia Ayeni, will compete in both men’s singles and doubles, aiming for a landmark victory on home turf.

Nigeria earned their play-off spot after a strong showing at the African Group III tournament in Zimbabwe, where they finished among the top teams alongside Namibia and Senegal. This impressive performance secured their promotion and a place in the highly competitive World Group II Play-Offs.

Following Nigeria’s qualification, the ITF officially granted the nation hosting rights, providing them with the advantage of playing in front of a home crowd in Lagos.

A victory against Uzbekistan would see Team Nigeria advance to World Group II, and potentially World Group I, moving them closer to the elite level of global tennis and the prospect of featuring in the Davis Cup World Finals.

Reacting to the news, Victor Ochei, President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), expressed confidence in both the team’s preparation and the country’s ability to host a successful tournament.

“We are optimistic that Nigeria will not only host a successful Davis Cup play-off but will also overcome Uzbekistan and return the country to the global spotlight in tennis,” Ochei stated.

The NTF president also praised the Lagos State Government, the National Sports Commission, and members of the Local Organising Committee for ensuring all logistics and facilities are ready for the tie.

The Davis Cup play-off is expected to attract considerable attention from tennis enthusiasts and sports fans across the country as Nigeria seeks to make a strong statement on the international stage.
