Popular Nigerian Afrobeat artiste Uptown the Maskking has revealed the compassionate reasons behind his recent ‘Garri Giveaway’ initiative.

In a statement, he expressed deep concern over the rising cost of living and its devastating impact on vulnerable groups, including young people, single mothers, and the unemployed.

“I was shocked to learn that a cup of garri now costs over N300,” he shared.

“When I realized that many people are struggling to afford even a single meal, I knew I had to act. A plate of eba from a local eatery used to cost N500, but now it’s around N1500. For many, that might be their only meal of the day.”

Uptown the Maskking highlighted the severe hunger crisis in Nigeria, noting that it has reached a “perverse stage” where people suffer from intestinal injuries due to prolonged hunger. “Many can no longer afford meat and instead collect bones from butchers to add flavor to their soup,” he added. “Even chicken intestines, heads, and legs are now sold for N1000.”

The artiste called for urgent intervention from authorities to address the widespread hunger and poverty. “If nothing is done, we might see a rise in mental health issues,” he warned. “I salute Davido, Wizkid, and Burna Boy for their philanthropic efforts. Life is tough.”

Uptown the Maskking’s ‘Garri Giveaway’ is a direct response to the harsh economic realities faced by many Nigerians, showcasing his empathy and commitment to helping those in need.
