Troops of Operation Peace Shield have rescued 10 women kidnapped by armed bandits in Sanga local government area of Kaduna State.
A senior military source at the Army Headquarters confirmed to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja that the victims were abducted from their farms at Unguwan Nungu on November 29.
According to the source, Sector 5 troops launched a coordinated search-and-rescue mission and intercepted the kidnappers around 6:40 a.m. on Friday as they attempted to collect ransom from relatives of the victims.
The troops reportedly engaged the abductors with superior firepower, forcing them to abandon the captives and escape.
Recovered items included a fabricated AK-47 rifle, a round of 9mm ammunition, and ₦1.6million cash believed to be part of the ransom sum.
The rescued women have been debriefed and reunited with their families, while efforts to apprehend the fleeing criminals were ongoing.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, commended the troops for the successful operation and urged them to sustain the offensive against terrorists, bandits, and other criminal groups across the country.
