The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to strengthening military partnerships with friendly nations, particularly in advanced professional training aimed at addressing evolving security threats.
The COAS stated this yesterday during a courtesy visit by the Egyptian Defence Attaché to Nigeria, Col. Mohammed Ibrahim, to the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
Shaibu said Nigeria maintains a longstanding, mutually beneficial military relationship with Egypt, describing the collaboration between the two armies as an important platform for enhancing operational capabilities and professional development.
In a statement by Army spokesperson Col. Appolonia Anele, the COAS emphasised that sustained cooperation through advanced military courses, training exchanges, and professional military education remains critical to preparing personnel to effectively confront contemporary security challenges.
The Army chief further observed that several Nigerian Army officers have benefited from specialised and advanced military training programmes in Egypt, which have significantly enhanced the professional competence of the force.
He expressed the Nigerian Army’s readiness to expand these training opportunities further to equip personnel with the knowledge and skills required to respond to complex security threats.
Shaibu also highlighted the importance of strengthening institutional linkages between both armies, including greater collaboration in strategic-level training and participation in programmes at the Nigerian Army War College. According to him, such engagements will deepen professional ties, promote knowledge exchange, and enhance joint capacity to counter emerging threats. He also invited the Egyptian Army to participate in the forthcoming Nigerian Army Day Celebration scheduled for July 2026.
The Army Chief further stressed the need to explore additional areas of cooperation, particularly in the development of aviation capabilities and operational support systems, noting that such collaboration will improve operational readiness, technological innovation, and overall mission effectiveness.
Earlier, Col. Ibrahim said his visit was aimed at reviewing the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by both militaries in 2024.
He disclosed that significant progress had been made in implementing several aspects of the agreement, particularly in training cooperation.
He added that preparations were ongoing for the next Military Committee Meeting scheduled to hold in Cairo later this year.
